Sub-Zero IW-30 and IW-30R Wine Columns, and the Drawers Underneath
Thirty inches is as wide as the integrated columns go, and the R is where two machines begin sharing one front. Wine above, storage drawers below, one panel governing both. What gets reported as a wine fault on an R is quite often the drawer half instead.

The drawer half of a tall model
On a tall model the drawers underneath are not a cupboard. They carry their own temperature, set from the options screen rather than the home screen, and they share the door and drawer alarm with the wine above. On the version fitted with an ice container, the ice maker has to be switched off before the container is lifted, and a three-minute delay holds cubes back while you do it.

Sub-Zero’s troubleshooting for these columns lists a warmer room as a reason the compressors run longer than expected. In Woodland Hills that is not an edge case for much of the year, and a column built into an interior wall with cabinetry closed over it has nowhere to shed what it makes. The condenser is behind the grille at the foot: the kickplate comes away on two mounting screws, then a soft brush to lift the felt and a vacuum worked the way the fins run. The Designer wine use and care guide asks for that every six to twelve months.

The service indicator is flashing on a clean condenser
The condenser comes first every time: clean fins, clear grille, nothing stacked at the foot. Where the indicator stays lit over a coil you can see daylight through, the column is reporting a reading it can measure, and the control side is where the work is.

Air is barely moving at the grille
Warm air has to leave the grille for cool air to keep arriving. When the fan slows, a thirty-inch cabinet holds enough mass to disguise it for a day, then gives up several degrees at once.

With clean fins, a clear grille and a room no warmer than usual, a column that never pauses is losing capacity somewhere in the sealed circuit. That is a diagnosis made with gauges, not a guess from the front of the cabinet.

A door or drawer alarm that will not settle
Volume, pitch and duration all sit on the settings screen, so the first job is deciding whether the alarm is wrong or the drawer is. A drawer that looks shut and still reports itself open is usually closure or a switch.

Do the storage drawers under the wine take their own temperature?
On the tall models they do. The wine zones are adjusted from the home screen, the left figure the lower zone and the right the upper, while the drawers are set from the options screen. That is why a drawer can be wrong while the wine above holds perfectly, and why we check them separately.
The panel shows 45 and 55 but nothing is cooling. What is that?
